PTSD Symptoms

  • Behavioral: agitation, irritability, hostility, hypervigilance, self-destructive behavior, or social isolation

  • Psychological: flashback, fear, severe anxiety, or mistrust

  • Mood: loss of interest or pleasure in activities, guilt, or loneliness

  • Sleep: insomnia or nightmares

  • Also common: emotional detachment or unwanted thoughts

Recommendations for ACTIVATING a #PTMP Holostic Action Plan

SHORE UP THE LOVED ONE AND FAMILY’s PERIMETER

  1. Immediately consider the implementation of a Care Circle around the mental perimeter of a loved one

    1. Identify both VA (Veteran Administration) and First Responder Government and Non-Profit resources ie. An Intake Counselor or A Social Worker (resource links below)

    2. Identify trusted family members, friends, colleagues, faith leaders who are willing to join on a call or an in person meeting to support the individual suffering with PTSD and the family members impacted by the symptoms.

    3. Educate the family and friends about the nuances behind the mental health disease

    4. Discuss a plan of action to activate counseling that may come in the form of an inpatient or outpatient treatment center. (resource links below)

    5. Identify financial support through the VA benefits programs and Worker Benefits Compensation options through the EAP (Employers Assistance Programs.) In addition, the many incredible Foundations and Non-profit resources aimed to support First Responders and Veterans.

SHORE UP THE CAREGIVERS PERIMETER

  1. Take Care of yourself as the Care Giver or the one you know whose impacted by the loved ones diagonosis and REACH OUT if your a Veteran Care Giver to VA National Caregiver Support Line: 1-855-260-3274 (M-F 8am-11pm, Sat 10:30am-6pm) and if you are a First Responder Care Giver please call Call 415-721-9789 or submit an inquiry via the Contact link.

  2. Begin to identify partners of PTSD peer-to-peer support groups.

SHORE UP THE EMPLOYER PERIMETER

  1. Speak with your loved one’s Employer to inform them about an incredible effort underway from OSHA - Total Workers Health ask if they are aware and would be willing to look into these standards to ensure his/her mental wellness at work is also sured up!

  2. Identify support Peer-to-Peer programs that wipe out any issues around stigma for seeking help in these fields. These programs have proven to be an incredible pathway for people to seek the medical counseling needed to address PTSD without the peer stigma often discussed.

    SHORE UP THE COMMUNITIES PERIMETER

    1. Call or Set up a meeting with your elected officials and bring up the desire to take a look at all related Policies regarding the identification (screening), treatment, employers role and responsibility, and care for PTSD among Veterans and First Responders.

    2. Support review of legislation that identifies PTSD as an occupational disease which would qualify medical assistance through workers compensation. States that have passed the legislation are Florida and Washington. For more information click here

    3. Become civicly engaged in NAMI and the work their doing with First Responders and Veterans.

    4. Spread the word! Educate friends, community leaders, and your neighbors about the importance of educating the public on PTSD. SHARE THIS WEBSITE
